Health Benefits of Honey...

Natural honey has been used by mankind since the past 2,500 years, all over the world. While the numerous health benefits of honey have made it an important aspect of traditional medicines such as Ayurveda, scientists are also researching the benefits of honey in modern medicine, especially in healing wounds.

Known as Honig in German, Miele in Italian, Shahad in Hindi, Miel in French, Miel in Spanish, Mel in Portuguese, мед in Russian, Honing in Dutch, and μελι in Greek, there is hardly any region in the world where honey is not cherished.

What makes honey so popular? It is the ease with which it can be consumed. One can eat honey directly, put it on bread like a jam, mix it with juice or any drink instead of sugar, or mix it with warm water, lime juice, cinnamon and other herbs to make a medicine. It is savored by all due to its taste as well as health benefits.

The health benefits of honey include the following:

Sweetener: Sugar can be substituted with honey in many food and drinks. Honey contains about 69% glucose and fructose enabling it to be used as a sweetener.
Energy Source: Honey is also used by many as a source of energy as it provides about 64 calories per tablespoon. One tablespoon of sugar will give you about 50 calories. Further the sugars in honey can be easily converted into glucose by even the most sensitive stomachs. Hence it is very easy to digest honey.
Weight Loss: Though honey has more calories than sugar, honey when consumed with warm water helps in digesting the fat stored in your body. Similarly honey and lemon juice and honey and cinnamon help in reducing weight.
Improving Athletic Performance: Recent research has shown that honey is an excellent ergogenic aid and helps in boosting the performance of athletes. Honey facilitates in maintaining blood sugar levels, muscle recuperation and glycogen restoration after a workout.
Source of Vitamins and Minerals: Honey contains a variety of vitamins and minerals. The vitamin and mineral content of honey depends on the type of flowers used for apiculture.
Antibacterial and Antifungal Properties: Honey has anti-bacterial and anti-fungal properties and hence it can be used as a natural antiseptic.
Antioxidants: Honey contains nutraceuticals, which are effective in removing free radicals from our body. As a result, our body immunity is improved.
Skin Care with Milk and Honey: Milk and honey are often served together as both these ingredients help in getting a smooth soothing skin. Hence consuming milk and honey daily in the morning is a common practice in many countries.

Honey in Wound Management

The healing powers of honey are not hyped. The Waikato Honey Research Unit provides details about the world-wide research that is being carried out on the benefits of honey in medicine. Further, BBC reported in July, 2006 that doctors at the Christie Hospital in Didsbury, Manchester are planning to use honey for faster recovery of cancer patients after surgery. Dosage: Mix 4 tablespoons of honey with 3 teaspoons of ground cinnamon. Before going to sleep, apply it to your face; leave it on overnight. Apply as often as needed.
Verdict: The cinnamon is the most important part of this mix because it acts as an anti-inflammatory, and will take down the redness and puffiness, says Dr. Hirsch. But honey is also known for its healing and moisturizing properties when it’s applied to the skin.

16:68 (Asad) And [consider how] thy Sustainer has inspired the bee: [77] "Prepare for thyself dwellings in mountains and in trees, and in what [men] may build [for thee by way of hives]; -

16:69 (Asad) and then eat of all manner of fruit, and follow humbly the paths ordained for thee by thy Sustainer." [78] [And lo!] there issues from within these [bees] a fluid of many hues, wherein there is health for man. In all this, behold, there is a message indeed for people who think! -

A Cure for all Mankind

Amongst the many creatures Allah has created in this
world, there is a creature in which Allah Taala’s bounty is clearly
evident, the honeybee. Allah Taa’la has enabled the honeybee to produce
such a substance within which there is a cure for all mankind. Regarding
the honeybee, Allah Taa’la says in the Glorious Qur’an:

“And your Lord inspired the bee, saying, ‘take your
habitations in the mountains and in the trees and in what they erect.
Then, eat of all fruits, and follow the way of your Lord made easy (for
you).’ There comes forth from their bellies, a drink of varying colour
wherein is healing for men. Verily, in this is indeed a sign for people
who think.”

In this verse, we learn of one great benefit of
honey for mankind; The ability to heal. Another astonishing factor in
honey is that it varies in colour and viscosity in accordance with
conditions such as the climate and the type of Nectar, etc. This is
significantly different to fresh milk which does not vary in colour or
viscosity due to changes in the animal’s provision or weather
conditions.

In a Hadith, Hazrat Abdullah bin Mas’ood has reported Allah’s Messenger as saying:

“Make use of two remedies, Honey and Qur’an.”

Honey has been useful both as food and medicine. Honey has been
produced by bees from nectar. It contains a unique combination of
sugars, acids, minerals, enzymes, vitamins, and flavour to make it one
of the best foods as well as one of the most easily digested and highly
acceptable materials known to man.

Some of the benefits which honey gives to its consumers are mentioned below:

  • One teaspoon will help to clear most colds and coughs
  • Drinking honey diluted in hot water in winter and cold water in summer relieves stress and is an ideal energy supplement
  • A spoonful of honey early in the morning restores health and increases potency
  • Honey improves memory and eyesight
  • Honey strengthens the joints in the body
  • Honey has four times more energy than milk
  • Honey reduces stress and tiredness
  • Honey is not harmful for diabetics

And to sum up everything, honey is a blessed Sunnah of our beloved Prophet . This is known to us from a narration by Hazrat Aisha , who says:

“The Prophet loved sweet and honey.”

May Allah Taa’la bestow upon us all the ability to utilise honey, so
that we can fully benefit from all of its properties and act upon the
Sunnah of Nabi .

Bees-eye view: see how Allah has created the bee!

And your Lord inspired the bees, saying: "Take you habitations in the mountains and in the trees and in what they erect. "Then,
eat of all fruits, and follow the ways of your Lord made easy (for

(Quran, The Bee 16:68-69)

A bees-eye view: How insects see flowers very differently to us

To the human eye, a garden in bloom is a riot of colour. Flowers
jostle for our attention, utilising just about every colour of the
rainbow.

But of course, it is not our attention they need to attract, but that of insects, the perfect pollinating agents.

And as these remarkable pictures show, there is more to many flowers
than meets the eye - the human eye at least. Many species, including
bees, can see a broader spectrum of light than we can, opening up a
whole new world.

The images, taken by Norwegian scientist-cameraman Bjorn Roslett,
present a series of flowers in both natural and ultraviolet light,
revealing an insect's eye view.

Scroll down for more

Evening primrose (Oenothera biennis): To the human eye the flower looks
solid yellow but insects can aim for the bullseye in the centre

Dandelion (Taraxacum officinale): The familiar mop top is transformed for the bees

Ultraviolet light, invisible to us, uncovers colours and patterns which
drawthem to the source of pollen and nectar - all hidden to humans
without special equipment.

This secret colour world was discovered in the Fifties and scientists
realised that these distinct patterns were designed to act as "landing
strips" or arrows, guiding the insects to the right spot.

Because we cannot see UV light, the colours in these photographs are representational, but the patterns are real.

Scroll down for more

Wood anemone (Anemone nemorosa): Insects are often drawn to darker
colours, so this vibrant hue would be instantly attractive and draw them
in

Spring crocus (Crocus vernus): The ultraviolet image creates three rings of colour to guide insects to a happy landing

Silverweed (Potentilla anserina): It is hard to imagine that these
yellow flowers are actually hiding a two-tone pattern, as revealed in
the ultraviolet image

Many species, including bees, can see a broader spectrum of light than we can
